coffee prince (2007) review

hiii!! as i briefly mentioned in my last blog post, i finished watching coffee prince!! now, i would like to share my thoughts about the main characters and the story itself. i'm not the best at reviewing media, so i apologize if my thoughts are all over the place. however, this site was very helpful in helping me recall the episodes, and i tried my best to be coherent. let's begin~!

☕️ main characters

  • ❤︎ eunchan ❤︎: she's seriously the sweetest most adorable girl ever. she's so hardworking, silly, smart, brave, and optimistic. while watching, i felt such a strong connection to her character, and so much so that every time she cried, i cried too. overall, i think her pretending to be a guy in order to work at the coffee shop was valid. she was just trying to provide for her family, and her decision to keep her identity hidden shows that she would stop at nothing for them. when she finally revealed herself to hangyul and explained that the only reason she didn't tell him sooner was because she was afraid he'd leave her, that was a little selfish. then again, she was also willing to never tell hangyul the truth if it meant that she could remain by his side. all in all, though, she just wanted to stay close to the people she loved, and i don't see anything wrong with that.
  • hangyul: he's quite serious on the outside, but when you get to know him he can be kind. he loves hard, but if i was in eunchan's situation, his temper would have pushed me away a long time ago. bc no, you will not yell at me and physically push me around!! (seriously tho, why was he always slamming her into walls?!) he was so pushy and selfish sometimes, especially when he still thought eunchan was a guy. then when he found out she was a girl, he was mad at first, but then when he finally confessed to eunchan, he started pressuring her to marry him right away! it made me nervous, because eunchan made it clear she wasn't ready. she was still young and wanting to pursue her dream of becoming a barista. i was so happy when hangyul finally stepped back and let eunchan make her own decisions and study abroad. he's a cool guy i guess, but be cautious around him, lol.
  • hansung: i really liked him. he was so chill and kind to eunchan. truthfully, there was a part of me that wanted them to end up together, bc both of them were having difficulties in their relationships at the time. i really feel like eunchan brought out such a good side of him. the scene where hansung kissed eunchan unexpectedly was SO awkward tho, followed by eunchan running into yoojoo while rushing out of the house... aghh. but anyways, i'm glad hansung and yoojoo ended up back together and happy.
  • yoojoo: ah, where do i even start with her... she was very headstrong and always kept herself busy. she never came across as the type to settle down and get married, despite what ended up happening, lol. honestly tho, i was very confused by her character at first. she left hansung after nine years to be with DK, then returned and started hanging around hangyul, and then hansung let her back in his life, (seriously a pushover move...) but neither of them seemed to be ready to jump back into a relationship with each other. that's understandable! but when yoojoo found out hansung had developed feelings for eunchan, she got mad. and although it was okay for her to be mad, she cheated as well. as the story progressed, though, i started to realize why she was acting so selfishly. in one scene, she mentioned something along the lines of how hansung only had eyes for her and let her do whatever she wanted and always waited for her. when hansung kissed eunchan, yoojoo realized she might be losing hansung and his unwavering loyalty, and that broke something in her. that's why she was saying she had feelings for DK again and was going to the usa with him, even though she ended up changing her mind last minute. but again, i'm glad her and hansung ended up reconciling and getting married, though.

☕️ the princes

  • harim: i liked him at first because he was silly, but then he upset me when he started talking crazy to eunchan after hangyul found out eunchan was a girl and locked himself up in his apartment. on top of that, HE was the one who opened his big mouth and told hangyul that eunchan was a girl. like!?!? this is your fault if anything, dude. hangyul and his horrible temper is NOT eunchan's fault.. he walked out of that coffee house on his own. harim redeemed himself soon after tho.. it was kinda funny to see him being such a loser for byeol. (also, byeol was seriously so pretty. i loved her outfits. ♡)
  • sunggi: i was really fascinated by him. call me eunsae with how much i loved seeing this man on my screen. he was sooo pretty and mysterious, and i wanted to know more about his story. the whole situation with his ex girlfriend and child was really interesting, and it's kinda sad they didn't get that happy ending like everyone else. despite that, i like how he was always supportive and kind to eunchan no matter what. also, it was so heartwarming how he agreed to teach the new girl employee how to make waffles at the end.
  • minyeop: he was so cute and silly idc idc idc!!! i was a little concerned about his relationship with eunsae in the beginning, bc she was in highschool and he's an adult apparently, but um.. alright. anyways, eunsae was really rude to him, always ordering him around and pushing him away when he tried to be nice. it was such a satisfying moment when sunggi humbled eunsae and told her to stop being like that. minyeop was a bit of a loudmouth, like when he accidentally revealed to harim that eunchan was a girl but he's so funny that i couldn't help but love him. he's like a little brother! idk how i feel about his eventual relationship with eunsae, but i'm glad he was able to become a model, even if it he was only having pictures taken of his back, lol.

overall, the show was great and i thoroughly enjoyed it. i love how each of the characters all had their own individual flaws and their own story. i feel as though romantic media often tends to revolve around one main couple, while everyone else is simply a side character in their story.

with coffee prince, though, everyone had their own struggles to navigate, and that's what made it enjoyable. it would be so incredibly boring if the story solely focused on eunchan and hangyul. with how much those two fought, i don't think i would've even finished the show.

so yeah, those were my thoughts on everything. i know this post was veryyyy lengthy, but if you read this far, thank you so much!!

lastly, i wanna give a HUGE thank you to koi for recommending this show!! it was absolutely amazing.

i'll be on my way now, but i hope to talk with you guys soon!! i love you, byebyeee~
